Knowing and Believing Things: What DP-Complementation Can Tell us about the Meaning and Composition of (Factive) Attitudes

چکیده
Abstract In the Hintikkan tradition, attitude verbs are viewed as relations between individuals and propositions. Previous work on know believe with Content DPs like rumour has tended to treat CP vs. DP polysemy. this paper, I show that polysemy runs into conceptual empirical problems, propose instead a new decompositional approach know-verbs, which avoids polysemy; linking both same lexical root, describes, broadly speaking, acquaintance. This analysis thus provides an explicit compositional morpho-semantic link accounts for interpretation of objects acquaintance, further captures idea knowledge, factivity more broadly, is tied acquaintance situation, res ( Kratzer 2002, a.o.). Based detailed examination morpho-syntax complements believe, can either combine in fashion CPs, direct object (saturating propositional argument slot, Uegaki 2016), or indirect object, via type attitudinal applicative (proposed here). The former option defined latter agentive DPs, so-called Source DPs. Together, these proposals account observation sentences varies depending (believe referee), whereas types interpreted At core current proposal differ fundamentally at level structure internal composition, different routes; contrary uniform approaches believe. Whereas believe-verbs describe intensional content, require external licensing mechanisms know-verbs complex relations, anchored holder’s (abstract concrete) world, make reference part their structure. also builds adds previous insights about connections factivity, DP-complementation, question-embedding.

What brain imaging can tell us about embodied meaning
Brain imaging studies of language processing (using fMRI) can indicate under what circumstances the embodied aspects of language representations become activated. In particular, the processing of language is distributed across a number of cortical centers, including not only classic language areas in association cortex (which might be involved in symbolic processing) , but also sensory and moto...
متن کاملWhat can proteomics tell us about platelets?
More than 130 years ago, it was recognized that platelets are key mediators of hemostasis. Nowadays, it is established that platelets participate in additional physiological processes and contribute to the genesis and progression of cardiovascular diseases. Recent data indicate that the platelet proteome, defined as the complete set of expressed proteins, comprises >5000 proteins and is highly ...
متن کاملWhat Charm Can Tell Us About Beauty
A number of ways are reviewed in which the study of charmed particles can answer corresponding questions about particles containing b quarks. Topics include the properties of resonances, the magnitude of decay constants, the size of spin-dependent effects, and the hierarchy of lifetime differences.
متن کاملWhat can NLP tell us about BioNLP?
The goal of this work is to apply NLP techniques to the field of BioNLP in order to gain a better insight into the field and show connections and trends that might not otherwise be apparent. The data we analyzed was the proceedings from last decade of BioNLP workshops. Our findings reveal the prominent research problems and techniques in the field, their progression over time, the approaches th...
متن کاملWhat behaviourism can (and cannot) tell us about brain imaging
Robert Shulman belongs to a rare breed. On the one hand, he is a true pioneer of MRI, a technology that has galvanised cognitive neuroscience by allowing researchers to trace the flux of metabolic activity in the living brain under diverse experimental conditions. On the other, he is a staunch behaviourist who believes that terms like ‘attention’ and ‘working memory’ should be expunged from sci...
